Privacy Policy — Salam: Islamic Companion
Last updated: August 12, 2026
Salam ("the extension", "we", "our") is a Chrome new-tab-page extension that shows prayer times, the Hijri calendar, and Quran verses. This page explains what data the extension accesses, why, and what happens to it.
In short: Salam does not collect, sell, or share your personal data. Everything it stores stays on your own device. The only data sent off your device is your location, sent to a prayer-time calculation API, and it is used only to return prayer times to you — it is not stored on our end because we do not operate any server at all.
1. What data Salam accesses
| Data | Why we need it | Where it goes |
| Your device location (latitude/longitude) |
To calculate accurate prayer times for your city |
Sent directly from your browser to api.aladhan.com over HTTPS, for that single calculation. Not sent to us — we have no server. |
| Your settings (calculation method, theme color, saved shortcuts, notification preference) |
To remember your preferences between browser sessions |
Stored locally in your browser via Chrome's built-in storage API. Never transmitted anywhere. |
| Cached prayer times and your last known location |
So the new tab page loads instantly without waiting on the network every time |
Stored locally in your browser only. |
2. Third-party services Salam talks to
- Aladhan API (api.aladhan.com) — receives your coordinates to calculate prayer times. See their own policies at aladhan.com.
- AlQuran Cloud API (api.alquran.cloud) — returns the Quran verse text shown on your new tab page. No personal data is sent to this service; it only receives a verse number.
Neither service is controlled by us. We chose them because they are free, public, and widely used for this exact purpose, but we encourage you to review their own privacy practices if you have concerns.
3. What Salam never does
- We do not run any backend server of our own — there is nowhere for your data to be stored by us, because we don't operate infrastructure.
- We do not sell, rent, or share any data with advertisers or data brokers.
- We do not track your browsing history, other tabs, or activity outside this extension.
- We do not use cookies or any cross-site tracking technology.
4. Your choices
- Location access is requested by your browser, not silently — you can deny it, and Salam will simply be unable to show prayer times until you allow it or grant it again.
- You can clear all locally stored data at any time by removing the extension, or via Chrome's own extension storage controls (chrome://extensions).
- Notifications can be turned off entirely in the extension's settings page.
5. Children's privacy
Salam is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect data from children. Its content (prayer times, calendar, Quran verses) is general-purpose and suitable for all ages, but the extension itself is not specifically designed for or marketed to minors.
6. Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the "Last updated" date at the top of this page will change accordingly. Continued use of the extension after an update means you accept the revised policy.
